An entry for the 2023 Mockup Game Jam! With the idea in mind of making a fictional game that we did not need to deliver on, the draft for this game got super conceptual in scope. A game where the player and the character they control know that they're in a video game but those game-like actions are completely non-sensical to the NPCs of this game world.

To simulate the 1-bit game experience, the majority of the work for this game was done in Bitsy!

So many games allow for the narrative dissonance of your character just jumping around, doing whatever from the second you get control and start messing around with buttons. In a similar vein to games like The Stanley Parable that play with choice, That Time I Learned I Was In a Video Game really takes the idea of video game literacy to the absolute extreme and examines what would happen in the world of the game itself and how horrifying it would be if you knew you could do things the game doesn't tell you?

this is super cool!!! i love the concept and love metatextual exploration like this. I know the point is to Not make an actual game, but i can't help but wanting to play it for real!!
